Martinez Welcome Mural: Joe DiMaggio Hometown Hero Project

With support from CGFP and MCF, the Joe DiMaggio Hometown Hero Project completed the Martinez Welcome Mural, a landmark public art installation at 330 Ferry Street, directly across from the Martinez Amtrak Station. Spanning approximately 250 feet by 25 feet along the south wall — with a companion 50-foot "Major Contributors Wall" on the east side — the mural transforms an aging concrete wall into a vibrant gateway welcoming thousands of residents and visitors each year.

At its center are three symbols of Martinez's identity: hometown hero Joe DiMaggio, conservationist John Muir, and the martini, long associated with the city's history. Surrounding them are cherished local landmarks and details, from the John Muir House and bocce games to the city's beloved beaver and the railroads that shaped Martinez as a transportation hub.

The project involved far more than paint: crews removed deteriorated surface material, replaced five aging light fixtures with seven new ones on a photocell-controlled system, applied waterproofing primer to protect the wall, and finished the work with three coats of UV-protective coating expected to preserve the mural's colors for at least a decade.

As one of the first landmarks travelers see when arriving by train, the mural now serves as a lasting first impression of Martinez — strengthening civic pride and inviting visitors to explore the city's history and culture.
